When searching for a hotel, most people look at the price then look at the star rating. Some people even go as far to reading what past guests have said about that hotel. Star ratings are scored on a 1 to 5 point or star scale, 1 being the poorest and 5 being the highest. The opinions are based on things such as how comfortable the beds are, how the service was and if there was safe conditions in the parking lot or garage.
There is another rating system that comes from AAA (American Automotive Association). AAA rates hotels and restaurants on a diamond system. When AAA inspects a property, unannounced, they take a tour of the property. If the agent approves the property, means the hotel meets all the basic needs of a AAA member. AAA will not approve unsatisfactory quality hotels. AAA also scales their hotels on a 1 to 5 ranking.
Diamond hotels are all good hotels. Five diamond means its the most luxurious hotel. A one diamond hotel is a good economy hotel. If you are looking for a safe clean hotel a one or two diamond hotel might be good for your travel needs. Another reason to follow AAA ratings is that there is a very specific checklist the AAA inspectors must follow. It is very specific — when a inspector is on a property they are looking and listening at everything. At a 4 or 5 diamond hotel the staff must answer the phone within three rings. A five diamond hotel must have 24 hour room service. As you can see the requirements are very specific.
AAA inspectors check hotels and restaurants every year to make sure they are still meeting all the requirements. Inspectors do not take their jobs lightly, they will allow hotels to drop in ratings. The list of hotels will include how many years it has been at its current diamond level. You will know if the hotel you are looking at has gone up in down in the past years.
Some times you may read about hotels stating they are a 6 star hotel. Obviously, there is no such thing. All rating are based on a 1 to 5 scale. The 6 star rating is usually a hotel giving that to themselves to they can stand out more. Of course a prior guest might write they are a 6 star hotel because the guest had the best time of their life staying on the specific property.
