How Much Should I Give at a Wedding?

Blog-post-9

How much should I give at a wedding, seems to be a common question.  Its really hard to know exactly how much per plate the bride and groom (or whoever is footing the bill) are spending per person. Some people, instead of giving money chose to buy off the registry as well. But again how much should I spend on the gift? That’s another common question. What really is etiquette for a wedding gift?

The finical advisers from the Knot.com have recommended splitting it up three ways: 20% engagement gift, 20% bridal gift and 60% on a wedding gift. But don’t start out with a big expensive engagement gift and then when its wedding time you can’t afford the wedding gift. If you chose to do this you really need to plan ahead and allocate what your doing ahead of time.

If you are attending a wedding for a co-worker or distant friend, spend at least $50-$100 on the wedding present. Someone who you are closer to you might want to increase the price to $100 or $125.

Most people are very understanding when they know a guest has a rocky financial situation. In this case you may want to give something more on a personal level. Not only will this save you money it will mean a lot more to the bride and groom.

If you are going to an out of town wedding, it’s probably OK to spend less on a gift. Brides and Grooms know you are paying your own accommodations to celebrate their big day with them! But, make sure you give a gift — don’t look tacky!

Another good idea to do, is after your wedding keep a list of what people gave you as gifts, and give back what you received, when they get married! Obviously, this does not work if your not married yet!

Another suggestion is buy off their registry, the couple took time out of their busy lives to make it easier on you! They made a registry for a reason, it’s exactly what they want! Usually, there is an array of different prices ranges, so it shouldn’t be too hard for a guest to find something they can afford. Most retailers make it so convenient, you can order online, have it shipped, and gift wrapped at that!

But if you really think about it, you really shouldn’t base your gift off of what you think the price per plate is. You should spend what is appropriate for your relationship to the couple. Here is how most people select their gift at a wedding:

  • Coworker/distant family or friend – $50-$75
  • Relative or friend – $75-$100
  • Closer relative or close friend – $100-$150
  • Closest friend or family member – $150-$200+
